EC Faculty Wins International Award |

Journalist and Teacher Arthur Allad-iw was one of the 11 honorees during the thematic year-end reception of the International Labour Organization (ILO), for his article “Anti Dam Activist Gets Laureate Award”. This was his entry to the “Pagkilala sa mga Natatanging Kuwentong Katutubo”, a program by ILO and its partner organizations Probe Media Foundation, Inc. and Philippine Press Association. With the ILO’s theme this year on Indigenous Peoples (Tribute to Indigenous Peoples as Partners in National Development), the winners were honored in simple ceremonies at the Rockwell Tent, Plaza Garden, Rockwell Center, Makati on December 12, 2011.
Out of the original 75 entries to the different categories of the program, Allad-iw’s article, along with 24 other entries was recommended by a screening committee to judges who selected the 11 best stories, with Allad-iw winning in the online category. Allad-iw’s article primarily centered on the life of Bontoc woman, Mother Petra Macliing, and her involvement in the anti-Chico River Dam struggle and her active role in opposing Benguet Corporation’s attempt to mine in their area. The article not only highlighted an Indigenous Woman’s value for culture and the environment but has also shown her capacity to take a lead role, despite the personal circumstances surrounding her life. For this she was awarded by the Women’s World Summit Foundation the Laureate Prize for Rural Women for year 2009.

Easter students, faculty and alumni join the Holy Innocents Episcopal Choir (HIEC) in this year’s Lessons and Carols held last December 9 and 11, 2011 at the Holy Innocents Church. Adapted by the HIEC last year, the Lessons and Carols is a yearly activity of Brent International School Baguio since the 1920’s.
A Quick History. “In 1880 E.W. Benson, Anglican Bishop of Truro, England, composed a festival of Nine Lessons and Carols, based on ancient sources, for Christmas Eve. In 1918 it was adapted for chapel at King’s College, Cambridge. The Nine Lessons have been customarily used ever since at King’s College and has been edited and adapted for various congregations the world over as an advent service- a prelude to the Christmas season.” – (Brent International School Baguio 2011 program of Lessons and Carols)

One hundred percent passers. Easter College’s new teachers pose with Teacher Education Department Dean Eugenia C. Sumawang, during the oath-taking ceremonies.
Around 2,000 successful examinees from Baguio and nearby provinces attended the 20th oath taking rite for teachers on December 12, 2011 at the Eugene Pucay, Sr. Gymnasium. In her warm welcome and heartfelt greetings, EC president Dr. Brigitt S. Santiago extended her congratulations not only to the new teachers, but also to the parents and mentors, in recognition of their role of making it possible for these new professionals to achieve their dreams.
